St Helens bounced back from their derby defeat against Wigan with a comprehensive victory at Castleford.

The win sees Mick Potter's side keep pace with the pack of teams behind Warrington and Wigan.

Castleford have now lost seven of their 10 games and remain at the wrong end of the Super League table.

Saints had raced into an early lead, but the home team hit back well before the visitors switched on the style in the second half.

The visitors dominated the opening minutes and Kyle Eastmond finished off a well-worked try after nine minutes. Keiron Cunningham's delayed pass saw Tony Puletua find a gap and his magnificent offload saw Eastmond go over.

Joe Westerman put the restart out on the full and Saints capitalised as Matty Ashurst's pass freed Francis Meli down the left flank and the big winger crossed in the corner.

The Tigers hit back after Puletua gave away a penalty close to his own line when he stripped the ball illegally in a two-man tackle. Huby made Saints pay by crossing under the posts, after good work by Brent Sherwin in the build-up.

Cas were soon level as they launched a superb attack from deep and Rangi Chase's brilliant offload allowed Sherwin to put Clayton over in the corner.

Roby's bursts from dummy half were causing constant problems for Cas and another strong run from the England hooker set up the field position for Maurie Fa'asavalu to crash over, Eastmond's conversion giving the visitors a 16-10 interval lead.

The outstanding Roby extended that lead early in the second half as Pryce's offload opened up a path to the posts, with Eastmond adding the conversion.

Another try followed instantly as a Roby burst allowed Pryce to break through, before Meli went over out wide for his ninth try of the season.

The Tigers hit back as Chase's flat pass saw Westerman break a tackle to reach out and score, but any hopes of a comeback were quickly ended as Eastmond wriggled his way over the line, and Puletua crashed over from close range moments later.

The game was by now one-way traffic and Pryce worked his way over out wide, before turning provider to give Roby an easy finish for his second try. Shenton crossed on the hooter for the hosts.

Castleford coach Terry Matterson:
"Unhappy fans are entitled to their opinion but we are struggling at the moment. I don't think it's a secret. We have quite a few players out injured and it got a bit difficult for us today against a good side.

"I thought we competed well in the first half but this (Easter) period is not ideal for a team that has a squad as small as us.

"We have seven of our first team out, things are tough, but we have got to ride it through. It's not ideal but we have to back up for Friday [when Castleford travel to Huddersfield]."

St Helens assistant coach Keiron Purtill:
"I thought James Roby was outstanding. In the last couple of weeks he has been really good for us off the bench.

"He has been pretty versatile for us this year and has played a few different positions, but I thought he was excellent today at nine and really led us from the front.

"To score just before half-time always helps with the team talk, and we started the second half like a house on fire. Overall we're really pleased, it was a good team performance."
