Champions St Helens suffered a second Super League defeat in three games after Wakefield staged a superb second-half comeback to claim victory.
Saints led 18-6 at the break with tries from Mike Bennett, James Graham and Leon Pryce.
But Wakefield destroyed Saints in the second half. Ned Catic and Ryan Atkins first capitalised on some poor defence.
Jamie Rooney and Matt Blaymire added to Saints' pain before Ade Gardner's last-minute consolation effort.
Rooney was in superb form with four penalties and a drop-goal which left Saints stunned.
Although Wakefield deserved the victory, Saints, who lost to Harlequins last week, were lacking in passion and desire.
They committed a series of handling mistakes and defensive errors and will need to improve before next Friday's World Club Challenge against the Brisbane Broncos at Bolton's Reebok Stadium.
Wakefield coach John Kear:
"I'm delighted with the second-half performance and, above all, I'm delighted for the players because of all the hard work they put in.
"I know we've lost a lot of talent but there are still of plenty of good players and I think they showed that in the second half.
"All we said at half-time was 'stick with it, keep the faith'".
St Helens coach Daniel Anderson:
"We got steamrollered and I don't like making excuses for what was the poorest performance - certainly the poorest half - since I've been here.
"For the first time, our desire to win the game almost evaporated when Wakefield got on a roll.
"There's a significant number in our dressing room who probably don't have a level of pride in their performance today. I need to work harder with them and I will."
