Widnes stand-off search continues
Steve Carter is out with a serious injury
Captain Carter could be out for the season
Widnes Vikings are stepping up their search for a new stand-off ahead of the new Super League season.

The Vikings have been left short at number six after releasing Craig Weston for personal reasons and having lost captain Steve Carter to injury.

32-year-old Carter has undergone ankle re-construction and could even face the end of his career.

And coach Neil Kelly's efforts to field an unnamed rugby union trialist in this Sunday's friendly against St Helens have been thwarted.

"A bit of red tape got in the way and he won't be able to play on Sunday," said Kelly.

"We'll probably have a look at him in training to assess him."

Jason Demetriou and new signing Stephen Myler shared the stand-off role against Wigan and will be given another chance to stake a claim for the position.

Kelly could also switch the versatile Dean Lawford or loose forward Daniel Frame to six as he searches for a permanent replacement.
