New Zealand Warriors have been docked four points ahead of the new NRL season for breaching the competition's salary cap in the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

It is the first time a team has lost points before the start of a season, which this year begins on 10 March. A A$430,000 (182,000) fine was imposed.

"This is serious, above anything that has incurred a fine in previous years," said NRL chief executive David Gallop.

"We can't have a system whereby clubs can gamble on breaking the rules."
