Woods in the spotlight
BBC Sport Online takes a look at Dave Woods, who will be a key part of the television commentary team for this season's Challenge Cup.

For as long as he can remember, Dave Woods has wanted to commentate on a Challenge Cup match for Grandstand.

And next month his ambition will finally be realised when he teams up with Ray French as the BBC's TV team behind the mic for the knockout tournament.

To say the 35-year-old is an avid fan of the league code would be an understatement.

Woods is no stranger to the commentary box having been a member of the BBC's league team since May 1990

He attended his first-ever match at the age of two - when Wigan beat Warrington - and has attended every Challenge Cup Final since 1974.

Woods, though, is no stranger to the commentary box having been a member of the BBC's league team since May 1990, when he joined Radio Leeds.

He started the day after Wigan beat Warrington in the Challenge Cup final of that year and is Radio Five Live's leading league commentator.

Although never having played league, he put pen to paper for the first time during his A-levels when covering Wigan matches for the Bolton Evening News.

He also hosts the Super League Show, a BBC Two programme televised on Sunday mornings in the north of England.

A regular writer for BBC Sport Online, he is married with two children.

Dave Woods will be in the commentary box for Sunday's Challenge Cup fixtures.
