Sinfield hails Aussie Waite
BBC Sport Online columnist Kevin Sinfield says Great Britain would have lost the Ashes series 3-0 to Australia had it not been for David Waite's influence as coach.

There was a lot of talk about David Waite when he was appointed Great Britain coach.

Many were upset that we had turned to an Australian to resurrect our fortunes on the international stage.

We must build a team around the younger players

But looking back, he was the best man for the job.

It's easy to say in hindsight, but without David's influence I have no doubt we would have lost the Ashes series 3-0 and not 2-1.

He has so much knowledge about the game, stuff which he was only too willing to pass onto us in the six weeks we were together.

On a personal note, I just cannot wait to get going again so I can put everything I have learned into practice with Leeds.

My body probably needs a rest after the exertions of the last year but mentally I am still very fresh.

I will just have to try to remember what it felt like to play against the Australians - and beat them - when the new Super League campaign gets underway.

Great Britain coach David Waite
Waite has so much knowledge about the game
As for Great Britain, we are at a critical stage.

The gap between us and the world champions is decreasing every time we play them.

We are confident we can come out on top when the next Ashes series comes around in 2003.

I certainly want another crack at them.

What we must also do is build a team around the younger players, the guys who have got a taste of international rugby in this series.

Do that, and in a few years time we will have a side that will be capable of great things.

There is also a series against New Zealand to look forward to, which gives us another chance to take our game to the next level.

If we can beat the Kiwis, then we can call ourselves the second best team in the world.

And that would be a major achievement.
