Gary Connolly has been ruled out through injury
Australian-born centre Liam Tallon has been called up to the Irish Rugby World Cup squad as a replacement for the the injured Gary Connolly.

Tallon, 24, whose father is from Portlaoise, has played for Brisbane Norths in the Queensland State competition for the last two seasons.

"We have watched a video of Liam and no less a judge than Mark Murray, the Queensland State of Origin coach, rates him very highly," said Ireland co-coach Andy Kelly.

Tallon and Salford scrum-half Martin Crompton, a replacement for injured St Helens centre Anthony Stewart, will join the 24-strong squad this week.

The players are travelling to La Manga next Tuesday for warm-weather training ahead of Ireland's opening World Cup match against Samoa in Belfast on October 28.
