Full-back Sam Tomkins revealed Wigan set their sights on reaching the Challenge Cup final as soon as they lost in last year's quarter-finals.
The Warriors went down 12-10 to Leeds at Headingley in May 2010, but reached this month's showpiece at Wembley with Saturday's 18-12 win over St Helens.
Tomkins told BBC Sport: "It's been a goal of ours to get to Wembley since we got knocked out last year.
"We had success in the Grand Final but we wanted it in the Challenge Cup."
And he said it was their team spirit that helped them dig in after St Helens had hit back with two James Foster tries.
"We're a really tight group," said Tomkins. "We've got 17 lads who are willing and who work really hard for each other, and it is paying off."
During Wigan's run, coach Michael Maguire has refused to talk about the prospect of leading his side out at Wembley before he leaves at the end of the season to take over at South Sydney Rabbitohs.
But after seeing his side secure their place in the final against the winner of Sunday's semi-final between Castleford and Leeds, Maguire said: "It is very special, it's special for all of us.
"It has been a goal for us and now our goal is to go there and be the best we can be. It was another tough game but it is great for the boys that all their hard work has paid off.
"In the first half we had to dig deep but that allowed us to get to the other end in the second half and score a couple of good tries."
