Castleford winger Kirk Dixon
Kirk Dixon has kicked 81 goals for Cas in Super League games this season

Kirk Dixon proved the matchwinner with a 10-point individual haul as Castleford overcame Huddersfield to reach the Challenge Cup semi-finals.

Both sides ran in four tries in a tightly contested Yorkshire derby.

But Dixon's boot proved the deciding factor, the goal-kicking winger outscoring Danny Brough by landing three of his four conversions.

Dixon also claimed Cas's first try, supplemented by efforts from Jordan Thompson, Danny Orr and Ryan Hudson.

The Giants, who were always behind, responded to Cas's early 12-0 lead by replying before the break through Scott Grix.

Jermaine McGillvary then scored early in the second half to bring it back to 12-10, only for Orr's converted effort four minutes later to put the home side two scores in front again.

PREVIOUS CUP CLASHES
2009 Huddersfield 16-14 Castleford (quarter-final)
1962 Huddersfield 10-4 Castleford (quarter-final replay)
1962 Castleford 4-4 Huddersfield (quarter-final)
1953 Castleford 2-6 Huddersfield (round 1, 2nd leg)
1953 Huddersfield 36-14 Castleford (round 1, 1st leg)
1935 Castleford 11-8 Huddersfield (Final, Wembley)
1929 Castleford 8-0 Huddersfield (round 2)

Leroy Cudjoe then crossed on 55 minutes, again unconverted before Hudson replied six minutes later.

But, despite Michael Lawrence adding a fourth Giants try to make it 22-18 with 12 minutes left, Brough missed his third successive kick.

And, after a tense finale, that proved the end of the scoring as Huddersfield suffered their fifth consecutive away defeat and Cas set up their third successive Yorkshire derby in this year's Challenge Cup - a semi-final against Leeds.

By avenging their equally narrow 16-14 defeat by Huddersfield at the same stage of the competition in 2009, it also gives outgoing Cas coach Terry Matterson the chance to leave Wheldon Road at the end of the season with some silverware.

POST-MATCH VIEWS

Castleford coach Terry Matterson:

"It just looked like it was going to get away from us - similar to two years ago at the Galpharm - but we're a bit stronger at the moment, we held our nerve and I'm over the moon.

"Danny Brough missed a few goals but we held our nerve and that's a good way to win at the end. Defensively, we were outstanding and that's how we have to be against these sides.

"It doesn't matter if it's my last year, my first year or my third year or whatever, you want to get as far as you can. My time is coming to an end here and I was hoping that the highlights of my time here were still to come and, if we keep working hard and play well on the day, that could be the case."

Huddersfield coach Nathan Brown:

"It's heartbreaking because we just didn't give ourselves our best chance. That's what's disappointing about it. We just can't build any field position or pressure. The start of the second half probably summed up where we are at the moment.

"We scored a try and Cas were there for us to try to take and then we dropped the ball the next set. We're not putting enough pressure on the opposition to make them wilt enough and they need to do a little better.

"Broughy hasn't kicked well today, but we could have given our halves a much better chance with some better field position. At the end of the day, we could have given ourselves a better shot."
