Super League

Liam Colbon, Peter Fox and Kris Welham all claimed hat-tricks as Hull KR crushed Wakefield 70-14 to keep their play-off hopes alive.

Jake Webster (2), Clint Newton (2) and Michael Dobson were their other scorers as Rovers ran in 14 tries.

Early scores by Colbon and Fox were cancelled out by Kevin Henderson and Tommy Lee but, after that, Wakefield's resistance collapsed.

Luke George went over late on but it was scant consolation for Trinity.

Four tries inside the first 15 minutes set the tone for the game but, at that point, Wakefield seemed capable of matching the home side and even took a 10-8 lead.

However, Rovers took control and had run in seven tries by half-time to take a 34-10 lead.

The break did nothing to revive the visitors as Rovers continued to pick apart their ragged defence.

The defeat could have been even heavier but Dobson could only convert seven of Rovers' 14 tries.

POST MATCH REACTION

Hull KR coach Justin Morgan:

"We played with a lot of confidence. That showed on the scoreboard. We scored early and they got a couple of tries as well.

"But I'm very pleased that we went on with the job after half-time and that proves there is a great determination amongst the players.

"We scored some good tries from good plays. It's always pleasing from a coach's point of view when you come up with plays and we get the satisfaction when you see them out there."

Wakefield coach John Kear told BBC Radio Leeds:

"It's very frustrating - the scoreline doesn't tell a lie but you've got to feel some empathy with the players.

"They're working as hard as they can and we're turning out the best team we can, but we're in a bit of a hole at the moment and that's being reflected with what we're doing on the field of play.

"They can look at some good individual efforts but the collective effort wasn't good enough - that's the top and bottom of it.

"As seasons unfold, you find the quality climbs to the top end of the table. We are in a hole, staring down the barrel of a gun, but we have to come up with better efforts than that."
