Super League

Winger David Hodgson ran in a second-half hat-trick as Huddersfield claimed a convincing win over Super League basement side Crusaders.

But the result was overshadowed by a sin-binning and a serious-looking injury after the final hooter.

Crusaders forward Jason Chan was shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Giants skipper Kevin Brown.

Stand-off Brown needed 10 minutes of treatment before the game could end, but was later confirmed uninjured.

Brown had been at the heart of everything the Giants did and supplied a defence-splitting pass after just four minutes for David Fa'alogo to go over near the posts.

He then showed great agility in a solo run full of twisting turns after 23 minutes for a lovely touchdown which helped make it 18-0 at the break.

Hodgson scored from Scott Grix's kick after 52 minutes, adding further tries in the 62nd and 74th minutes to complete his first hat-trick since getting a treble against Hull in May.

The in-form winger has now run in 12 tries in his last seven games.

The other Giants scorer was Joe Wardle, who acrobatically touched down a Scott Grix kick after seven minutes.

Crusaders, on their way to a 16th Super League defeat of the season, never recovered from their bad start.

They gained some consolation early in the second half with a stylish brace from Tony Martin, but were well beaten as the Giants rallied well from last weekend's 46-12 hammering at Wigan.

Huddersfield assistant coach Paul Anderson told BBC Radio Leeds:

"Kevin was soon up and about and having a joke and a laugh with the lads in the changing room.

"We're relieved that the injury was not serious. We've got one or two other players out so the last thing we'd want would be to lose another key player, and that's certainly what Kevin is. Some of the things the players had to endure were not right, but we showed good discipline.

"Crusaders conceded 20-odd penalties in the game and if you keep on doing that at some point you're going to get unstuck.

"We could have been out of sight after 20 minutes but we made a few wrong decisions. What we wanted though was a response to last week's defeat. Good teams very rarely play badly twice in succession."

Crusaders coach Iestyn Harris:

"We conceded too easily early in the game and we went in at 18-0 down. We were pretty fortunate to be that.

"We lacked intensity and a bit of commitment. I thought Huddersfield were far superior to us in the first 40 minutes.

"We spoke about that at half-time and gave ourselves half a chance at 18-12. I thought we'd turned the corner and got our attitude right, and then we just lost a man to the sin-bin."
