Aussie Matt King's quickfire first-half brace put Warrington in control

A hat-trick from Matt King helped Warrington power back to the top of the Super League table as they returned to winning ways at Craven Park.

Simon Grix crossed for Wolves with 20 minutes gone before back-to-back tries from King and one from Ryan Atkins.

Lee Briers went in just after the break and Rhys Williams' try made it 30-0.

Blake Green, Liam Colbon and Scott Taylor hit back for Hull KR but Atkins' second, King's third and a Richie Myler try put Wolves out of sight.

Wolves were beaten on their last trip to Craven Park 14 months ago when they were went down 36-16.

But this time the hosts were blown away by a first-half 10-minute blitz when Wolves scored four of their nine tries.

The league leaders headed into the game on the back of being stunned by Salford a week ago.

That 18-16 home defeat effectively cost them the leadership for the first time in two months, having been overtaken first by Wigan on Friday night, then Huddersfield on Saturday evening.

Adding to their pre-match concerns, Tony Smith's injury-weakened side were taken all the way by Rovers in the second match of the season at the Halliwell Jones back in February, needing Brett Hodgson's late try to earn a dramatic 24-22 victory.

But, although tentative in the opening quarter at Craven Park, once Grix brushed aside Craig Hall to score and Hodgson converted, the visitors were off and running.

From the restart, he visitors then worked the ball right to the corner for King to score in his first game back after the birth of his first child last week.

Minutes later Briers, Hodgson and Chris Bridge worked the ball quickly back to King for his brace.

Hodgson - who had missed the kick for King's first try - was on target with the boot.

Atkins' first came when they created an overlap to stroll home in the corner and Hodgson made it 22-0 with 30 minutes gone.

Hull KR rallied up to the break but could not break Warrington down.

Michael Dobson's kick early in the second half was charged down to create Briers' try and the half-back put in the kick that created Williams' score shortly after to make it 30-0.

Green finally put Rovers on the scoreboard with 51 minutes gone, Dobson added the extras. But, from the restart, Colbon could not stop the ball bouncing out of play and, from the new set, Atkins found himself clear on the right for his second.

Colbon then went over shortly before Taylor scored, Dobson converted one of the two kicks to cut Warrington's lead to 30-16.

But when King took Briers' high kick - for his Father's Day hat-trick - and Myler grounded Michael Monaghan's kick any sense of a KR fightback was over.

Hull KR coach Justin Morgan:
"The first-half performance certainly was not acceptable. I got to the point of almost apologising to the fans for playing like that in the first 40 minutes.

"Everyone associated with this club deserves better. We made too many errors and gifted them the ball, although luckily enough they gifted it back to us.

"That level of performance is disappointing. I put my hand up and accept responsibility."

Warrington coach Tony Smith:
"We had opportunities in the first 20 minutes that we should have taken. I'll put that down to being anxious and trying too hard to bounce back.

"Once we settled down and took some control we did very well. We controlled a big passage of the first half and that really hurt Hull KR.

"We went 15 minutes where they couldn't get hold of the ball. We scored a few tries but the toll it takes later in the game is very energy-sapping when you have to tackle that much."
