Denis Betts to lead Widnes Vikings in Super League
Betts played for Wigan from 1986 to 1995
Widnes have confirmed that former Great Britain and Wigan forward Denis Betts will continue as head coach for their return to Super League next season.
The 41-year-old has been handed a two-year deal by the Vikings, who he joined last November after a four-year spell in rugby union with Gloucester.
Betts told BBC Radio Merseyside: "I am honoured that they can given me this opportunity. This is a great club."
Widnes were handed a three-year Super League licence in March.
The club, who are curently fifth in the Championship, will return to Super League in 2012 after a seven-year absence.
Betts added: "It fulfils my ambitions and my needs to be in that environment and working at the level that this club is going to be competing at.
"We have got a tough time ahead of us. What we can do now is give direction to the players that are here to help them understand where we are going and how we are moving forward.
"My appointment does that for the group that's here. They know what their role is within this team and we will be looking to take people with us on this journey. They know that and it gives them an opportunity to push their names forward."
