Barrow Raiders coach Wright to be given time - chairman

Wright took over from former coach Schofield late on Tuesday night

Barrow Raiders chairman Des Johnston says head coach Nigel Wright will be given time to make an impact after replacing Garry Schofield on Tuesday.

Wright, who arrived as Schofield's assistant, takes the reins just five games into the new season and will be in charge against Leigh on Saturday.

"We need some stability here now," Johnston told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"Nigel Wright is contracted until the end of the season. Hopefully, we can have a successful season and move on."

The new coach will be aided at Craven Park by the presence of Martin Clawson, who has experience as a conditioning coach with Super League side Bradford, and worked with the Raiders in pre-season.

"It is a situation we've addressed over the 24 hours, with Martin here full time through the week.

"Nigel will work with him, and he will carry on the same as he was doing.

"He'll be on Fridays and Saturdays, while other days will be looked after by Martin."

Raiders' poor start to the campaign has seen them lose two of five games so far, ahead of their Championship opener.

"I think there have got to be personnel changes," Wright told the North West Evening Mail.

"It would be stupid of me to say there shouldn't be. There have got to be."
