Championship play-offs round-up

Championship play-offs

Reigning champions Barrow found their form when it mattered as they crushed Widnes 38-0 in Sunday's Championship elimination play-off at Craven Park.

Barrow ran in seven tries to earn next Saturday's minor semi-final at home to Sheffield, who beat Leigh in midweek.

Ned Catic, Liam Harrison and Liam Campbell all scored first-half tries as managerless Barrow went in 18-0 up.

And there were four more second-half efforts for Campbell, James Coyle, Andrew Ballard and Matt James.

Widnes had beaten Barrow three times this season, including a 32-14 win in the two sides' last meeting on the same ground just 17 days before.

But the Raiders, under the temporary leadership of former coach Dave Clark following the departure of Steve McCormack, were simply far too good for Widnes on the day.

In their last outing at Featherstone Rovers a fortnight ago, Barrow had shipped 13 tries in going down 72-20, but they responded with a complete shut-out as Widnes suffered a rare 'nilling'.

Stand-off Jamie Rooney, one of four players to be recalled by Barrow, along with Catic, James and Zeb Luisi, landed four conversions, while Ballard also kicked a goal.

Sheffield pulled off a shock 26-24 win in Thursday's first Championship elimination play-off at Leigh - to end any hopes the home side had of being given a Super League licence for 2012.

The Centurions needed to make the Grand Final in order to submit an application for a licence.

And they led 18-12 at half-time thanks to scores from Dave Armitstead, Paul Smith and Mick Nanyn.

The Eagles had suffered a major blow with the first minute loss of full-back Misi Taulapapa with a suspected broken leg. But they took advantage of the early sin-binning of Chris Hill to score tries through winger Tim Bergin and forward Joe Hirst.

Yere's second try early in the second half kept the Eagles in touch but the home side stretched their lead to 24-16 when prop Stephen Nash went over on 53 minutes.

The tie was then back in the balance when video referee Stuart Cummings awarded a penalty try to Alex Szostak after he was tackled by Robbie Paul without the ball.

Brown's first goal from five attempts cut the gap to just two points.

And, as Sheffield launched a furious onslaught, Hirst and Danny Mills both fluffed clear-cut scoring chances and Yere was denied a hat-trick before Ireland international Bergin grabbed the match-winner five minutes from the end.

Championship One

Rochdale Hornets ran in 10 tries at Spotland as they slaughteredSouth Wales Scorpions 60-26.

Paul Crook, Craig Ashall and Dale Bloomfield all ran in two tries apiece.

Wayne English, Adam Bowman, John Cookson and Gareth Hayes also went over for the victors.

But South Wales did run in five tries of their own, through Jamie Murphy (2), Steve Parry, Lewis Mills and Aled James.

It was a bit tighter at the Woodlands Memorial Ground, where Blackpool came from 14-0 down at half-time to avoid an upset by beating Workington Town 36-26.

Forward Martin Ainscough ran in two of their six tries, all of which were converted by Tom Hemingway.

Tries from Jack Pedley and Jarrad Stack had Workington, who had finished seventh in the Championship One table, on course for an unlikely win against the fourth-placed Panthers.

But John Clough, Ainscough (2) and Mark McCully crossed early in the second half to put Blackpool in charge.

Elliot Miller brought Workington back into the contest but Blackpool pulled further clear thanks to tries by Damian Munro and Danny Halliwell.

Stack added a further consolation for Workington late on.
