Championship preview - week 19

Featherstone Rovers finally secured Championship top spot with a game to spare thanks to a 34-26 win at Batley.

Three years on from their promotion as Division Two champions, Daryl Powell's men have gone one better by claiming the the League Leaders' Shield.

A hat-trick from Zak Hardaker, who has now scored 11 tries in his last six matches, helped Rovers to their 17th win of the season.

That took them nine points clear of Halifax, who have just two games left.

Batley threatened an upset when tries from Ash Lindsay and John Gallagher put them 12-6 in front.

But scores from Matty Dale, Stuart Dickens and Ross Divorty saw Rovers home.

Halifax remain second after a 38-24 win over Sheffield at Bramall Lane.

Papua New Guinea international Menzie Yere scored two early tries for the Eagles and Tangi Ropati also touched down twice but Halifax ran in seven tries to secure a fourth successive win.

The Halifax tryscorers were Dominic Maloney, Ben Black, David Larder, Shad Royston, Penkwick, Dylan Nash and Lee Patterson, who also kicked five goals.

Dewsbury celebrated their survival with an eight-try rout of relegated Whitehaven at the Recreation Ground.

Kegan Hurst and Dominic Brambani both ran in two tries in a 48-10 victory that represented a 13th successive defeat for the Cumbrians, whose tries came from Dylan Skee and Graeme Mattinson.

Championship One

Oldham kept in touch with Championship One leaders Hunslet thanks to a 33-18 win over York at the Huntington Stadium.

John Gillam scored two tries and Neil Roden, Paul O'Connor and Lucas Onyango got the others as the Roughyeds secured a top-two finish.

Wayne Rettie (2) and Jack Stearman scored tries for the City Knights, who slipped to fourth place following a 24-16 derby win for Rochdale over neighbours Swinton.

Danny Smith, Dean Gorton and Dane Donoghue scored tries for Hornets, with Adam Bowman kicking six goals.

Craig Harvey's brace was not enough to prevent a fifth successive defeat for the Lions, which ended their lingering play-off chances.

Blackpool clinched their place in the play-offs with a 78-10 rout of bottom-of-the-table Gateshead, whose defeat was their 16th in a row.

Carl Forber, John Clough and Eddie Vaughan all grabbed hat-tricks, the other tries coming from Dean Thompson (2), Thomas Woodcock, Martin Keavney and Tom Hemingway, who also kicked 11 goals for a 26-point haul.

Matt Garside and Matt Baron scored Thunder's tries in their final home game of the season.

South Wales need just a point against York at The Gnoll next Sunday to qualify for the play-offs in their first season following today's 22-8 win over Doncaster.

Loz Wildbore, Ashley Bateman, Lee Williams and Lewis Mills scored the tries for the Scorpions while Rob Lunt was Doncaster's solitary tryscorer.
