Championship round-up - week 18

Featherstone moved a step closer to securing the Championship League Leaders' Shield despite a surprise 32-30 home defeat by Sheffield Eagles on Sunday.

It was only Rovers' second loss of the season, but their losing bonus point puts them nine points clear of second-placed Halifax, who have three games left.

The Eagles began to spoil the Featherstone party when Menzie Yere went over twice in the opening 12 minutes.

Kyle Briggs and Zak Hardaker pulled tries back for the hosts, only for Brendon Lindsay and Tim Bergin to give Sheffield a 20-12 lead.

Jon Steel gave Rovers hope, but Yere completed his hat-trick before Tangi Ropati sealed victory for the visitors.

Halifax had climbed into second place courtesy of their 30-16 victory over Widnes on Thursday.

The two sides were level at 12-12 at half-time, but Halifax pushed forward after the break

Sean Penkywicz scored three tries while Shad Royston and Luke Branighan also crossed the line.

At the other end of the table, Dewsbury secured their survival with a shock 30-6 win at third-placed Leigh on Sunday - a victory that also relegated Whitehaven, who did not play.

The Rams never looked back after racing into a 24-0 lead thanks to a Bryn Powell brace and further tries from Ed Barber and Pat Walker.

Saturday's fixture saw James Coyle and Ned Catic score two tries each as Barrow cruised to a 42-6 victory over Toulouse.

Raiders led 18-6 at the break but pulled clear after the restart as Jamie Rooney, who also kicked seven goals, Paul Noone and Andy Ballard also crossed the line. Antoni Maria scored Toulouse's only try.

In Sunday's other fixture, Johnny Campbell ran in a hat-trick as Batley thrashed rock-bottom Keighley 56-4.

Jason Walton and Ian Preece both also grabbed braces for the Bulldogs, while Josh Griffin, Lee Greenwood, Kris Lythe and Gareth Moore, who added six goals, also crossed. Gavin Duffy's unconverted try was Keighley's sole reply.

Championship One

Blackpool bounced back from being docked 10 points by the Rugby Football League for registration and salary cap breaches by winning a high-scoring encounter with London Skolars on Saturday.

The Panthers led 36-16 at the break before going on to emerge 54-40 winners, despite a hat-trick from the Skolars' Sam Gee.

Martin Ainscough and Carl Forber both scored two of Blackpool's nine tries, which were all converted by Tom Hemingway.

There was no respite for rock-bottom Gateshead as Aaron Henry and Rob Lunt both ran in hat-tricks as they were thrashed 66-0 by Doncaster on Sunday.

The Dons crossed 12 times in total, with Dean Colton grabbing a brace and Scott Watson, Aaron Doebeck, Micheal Butterfield and Craig Fawcett also going over.

Oldham missed out on the chance of securing a top-two spot as they crashed to a surprise 42-24 home defeat by South Wales Scorpions.

Lloyd White scored 26 points, including a hat-trick of tries, for the visitors, with Steve Parry, Andrew Gay and Casey Bromilow also touching down.

The Roughyeds replied through Lucas Onyango, Matty Ashe, Ben Heaton and Gregg McNally, who also kicked three goals.

Third-placed York City Knights edged out Swinton Lions 48-42 in a try-fest at Sedgley Park.

Ryan Esders grabbed a hat-trick and Tom Lineham took two of the Knights' nine tries, while Gavin Dodd and Alex Hurst crossed twice each for the Lions.

Workington moved to within two points of fourth-placed Rochdale with an 18-12 win over the Hornets.

Darren Holt converted tries from Neil Frazer, Jack Pedley and Aaron Low for Workington, while Paul Crook scored a try and kicked two conversions for Rochdale, for whom Andrew Saywell also crossed.
