Attard is a former union player

Gateshead Thunder have handed a trial to Maltese international half-back Roderick Attard with a view to a permanent move for the 2010 season. The 25-year-old Attard, who plays for club side Kalkara, has switched codes from union to league and is keen to establish himself in the 13-man game. "I have been training and playing rugby union for the past six years," he said. "This is an opportunity that I cannot miss for me to improve my rugby skills and learn more about rugby league." The trial has been funded by Thunder and supporters group Squadbuilder, following an earlier link-up between the club and the Maltese rugby league side.

Anthony Micallef, the Rugby League European Federation's Malta development officer, is keen for Attard to make the most of the chance presented to him by the North-East club. "It is another outstanding opportunity presented to Roderick and one I trust he will take with both hands," he said. "There will be much for Roderick to learn and the Malta Rugby League wishes Roderick all the best on the new opportunity that rugby league has given him."
