Wales and England in warm-up test

England and Wales will face each other in Bridgend on 17 October as both sides prepare for international tournaments.

The hosts, who lost 74-0 in a similar warm-up in Doncaster last October, will use the match as preparation for their European Cup campaign.

England, meanwhile, face Australia, New Zealand and France in the Gillette Four Nations tournament.

It will be the first full Wales v England international to be played on Welsh soil for eight years.

The previous encounter was in Wrexham in 2001, with England holding on for a 42-33 win.

England begin their Four Nations campaign against France at the Keepmoat Stadium, Doncaster, on 23 October, with matches against Australia at the DW Stadium, Wigan on 31 October and world champions New Zealand at the Galpharm Stadium, Huddersfield, on 7 November.

The BBC will show live coverage of the England versus Australia match, which kicks off at 1430 GMT, plus the Kangaroos' clash against France on 7 November.

Highlights of the other matches will also be available on the network and via the red button service, while Sky will also show live matches.

The tournament climaxes with the final at Leeds' Elland Road home on 14 November.

Wales' European Cup campaign starts on 25 October when they travel to face group minnows Serbia at the Fortress Stadium in Smederevo.

Ireland face Serbia on 18 October in Tullamore, so the group decider is expected to be Wales versus Ireland in Pontypridd on 1 November.

The winner of that group will advance to the European Cup final on 8 November - to be held at the Brewery Field, Bridgend - and will face the best team from the other three-team group contested by Scotland, Russia and Lebanon.

The two sides that finished runners-up in their respective groups will also play off against each other in Bridgend, as will the two last-placed sides.

Mark Rowley, the executive chairman of Wales Rugby League, is looking forward to watching Wales take on Ireland at Sardis Road.

"I'm delighted that a full international match will be played in my home town of Pontypridd," Rowley said.

"Wales have staged junior matches at Sardis Road in recent years but it's a credit to the ground and the area that we'll be seeing a top-class game at the Sardis Road that will see a number of Super League and probably NRL players taking to the field.

"I spent many happy years at Sardis Road as a player and I know how much everyone from the valleys loves their rugby whatever the code.

"I hope we get a large crowd on November 1st as this is expected to be a classic match."
