Hull KR (6) 10
Tries: Newton, Fox Goals: Dobson
Wakefield claimed victory over a lacklustre Hull KR to give themselves a boost ahead of the Super League play-offs, which start next weekend.
If Wigan lose to Huddersfield on Sunday, the Wildcats will secure fifth place while the Robins could see Huddersfield take third spot from them.
Dale Ferguson, Sam Obst, Aaron Murphy and Richard Moore all crossed to secure the victory for the home side.
Hull KR were dealt an injury blow when full-back Shaun Briscoe was forced off.
He left the field in the first half with a shoulder injury and he faces a race to be fit for the play-offs.
But it was the Wildcats who were celebrating their fifth consecutive win to ensure they ended the regular season with a record points tally of 32.
Obst was a key figure with his kick after just three minutes causing problems for Kris Welham and loose forward Ferguson pounced to open the scoring.
Danny Brough added the conversion to make it 6-0 but Rovers drew level on 13 minutes when second rower Clint Newton stretched out of a two-man tackle to plant the ball over the line, despite a hint of a knock-on.
Michael Dobson, the league's leading scorer, kicked the goal and the visitors would have taken the lead had Peter Fox been able to take Welham's pass with the line at his mercy.
But an error by veteran Stanley Gene, who lost the ball after a tackle by Obst, gifted possession back to the Wildcats and Obst took advantage to score a solo try which Brough converted.
Another Rovers mistake, this time from Ben Fisher early in the second half, allowed Wakefield a chance to extend their lead and Matt Blaymire sent Moore over and once again Brough converted before Fox gave his side hope with a try in the corner.
The Wildcats lost Brough through injury but extended their lead with a penalty from Obst on 56 minutes before making sure of the win seven minutes later when left winger Aaron Murphy won the race to Obst's kick to the corner.
Wakefield coach John Kear (on Sam Obst):
"He did everything tonight. I thought his effort was awesome and it shows how he is developing as a player.
"I was really pleased to reach a record points tally. It's a reflection of the hard work, ability and unity of the group to say that this is the best ever Wakefield team in Super League."
Hull KR coach Justin Morgan:
"It was a poor display. I saw more errors in that game than I've seen in the last month. We made some poor decisions and I don't think we showed a great deal of composure.
"But I'd like to give credit to Wakefield. I thought they were excellent and beat us in every area of the game.
"We've been pretty good at bouncing back and I expect us to do that next week. I don't think it's a huge blow to our confidence."
