Ratcliffe furious after York loss

York City Knights

York City Knights director of rugby James Ratcliffe criticised his side's "attitude" following their surprise 36-30 defeat at Rochdale.

The Knights scored three early tries to lead 18-0 but Rochdale hit back with four tries to lead 24-18 by half-time.

Ratcliffe told BBC Radio York: "Actions are louder than words and the players have not come up with them today.

"I'm very disappointed, I think we thought we'd won the game after 25 minutes and decided that's enough."

He added: "We started really brightly and then, all of a sudden, we came away from what worked so well for 25 minutes.

"I'll never understand why players do that, I'll never understand why a team does that, it's about discipline."

Much of the damage came from Rochdale's experienced playmaker Leroy Rivett, whose break brought the Hornets back into the game when 18-0 down.

"It's one mistake, markers have not spoke, he's come straight through and scored, and then they go into a steamroller and we just can't get hold of the ball again," Ratcliffe said.

But he refused to blame the officials over two disallowed tries, one for offside and the more contentious one for, it is thought, a foot placed into touch by John Oakes.

If we want to do anything in this league we've got to show more desire, more commitment, more discipline

"John's dived early, he's either got the ball down and scored, or he's short. All of a sudden the touch judge puts his flag up, but without looking at the video we can't really comment," he said.

"One of the players came up with the word, he said Rochdale showed more desire, which is disappointing.

"If we want to do anything in this league we've got to show more desire, more commitment, more discipline."

Chris Peacock filled in for loose forward David March after the club felt unwilling to risk his calf injury.

"We look to the big picture," said Ratcliffe.

"The last time he had a calf injury it took him six weeks to recover and so we decided on caution."
