Huddersfield wing David Hodgson claimed a hat-trick to help his side cruise to a 10-try victory at Belle Vue.
Huddersfield opened the scoring through Danny Kirmond but Wakefield responded with a converted Matt Blaymire try.
The Wildcats lead did not last long however as Hodgson and Leroy Cudjoe crossed before the visitors cut loose in the second half.
Kevin Brown, Scott Moore (twice), Paul Whaturia, Hodgson (twice) and Jamahl Lolesi all scored to complete the rout.
The defeat ends a miserable week for the Wildcats, who suspended scrum-half Danny Brough and prop Danny Sculthorpe for a breach of club discipline.
Wakefield coach John Kear:
"Conceding 40 points in the second half is just not good enough.
"The first half was what a proper game of rugby league should be - both teams working hard and defending well - but you can't switch off.
"The defensive effort in the second half was woeful and inept. We absolutely collapsed.
"There can't be any excuses. There were 17 full-time professionals out there. It's time for man in the mirror."
Huddersfield coach Nathan Brown:
"We discovered a lot of resolve in defence.
"Wakefield can score points and a lot of penalties went their way early in the game.
"To defend the way we did and finish them off in the second half was really pleasing.
"One to 17 contributed really well. I don't think there was anyone who didn't come up with something positive."
