Knights hold on to beat Cougars

York City Knights

York City Knights put in a strong first-half performance to beat Keighley Cougars 24-22 in Championship One and go fourth in the table.

The Knights scored four first-half tries to lead 22-6 at the break before Keighley came back in the second half.

Knights director of rugby James Ratcliffe told BBC Radio York: "They brought the game to us.

"There were quite a few people carrying injuries so we've put all hands to the pump and we've managed to get a win."

He continued: "[I was] really disappointed with the second-half performance but also you've got to give a little bit of credit to the Cougars.

"They came out and played a particularly strong second half in the forwards. We struggled sometimes to get out of our own end in the second half where as we found yardage pretty easy in the first 40."

The Knights next game is on 17 May at Rochdale and Ratcliffe said they hope the break will help the injury situation.

"We've had to take Danny Grimshaw out. He's pulled his groin. Dave March pulled his hamstring before half-time so it was damage limitation with him and then Dave Clayton's gone down a terrible pot hole on the field.

"Mark Applegarth twisted his knee so it was all hands to the pump and we've done alright."
