RFL delighted with Magic weekend

The Rugby Football League has said it is delighted with the latest round of 'on-the-road' Super League matches.

All 14 teams travelled to Edinburgh for the Murrayfield Magic weekend in which seven matches were played in the Scottish city over two days.

RFL chief executive Nigel Wood told the Super League Show: "It's certainly been well-attended and the standard of play on the field has been excellent.

"It's been a great spectacle for all concerned - fans and players alike."

Just under 60,000 supporters flocked to Scotland for the weekend and there were several shock results, including Wigan beating arch-rivals and table-toppers St Helens.

"You can always rely on rugby league supporters to come out in force and enjoy themselves and behave themselves," said Wood.

On the whole I think we're pretty satisfied we've got a formula that's attractive

"We've had 14 sets of supporters mixing freely and enjoying the city of Edinburgh."

Wood was also happy with the quality and discipline on display - no players were sent off in the seven matches.

"Super League is a very disciplined sport and the penalty you pay for breaching the rules are significant and therefore the coaches are well drilled," he said.

And the RFL remain confident that next year's road-show - also in Edinburgh - will prove to be a similar success.

"We're back here next year - it's a two-year arrangement and we're certain that it's very popular with fans," Wood said.

"We'll do some research and consultation with supporters groups and clubs to see if there are any tweaks to the schedule or improvements we can make but on the whole I think we're pretty satisfied we've got a formula that's attractive."

Rugby league fans can watch the Super League Show again on the BBC's iPlayer or via the Red Button.
