Tony Puletua scored four tries and Jon Wilkin added a hat-trick as St Helens romped to a 12-try win over Castleford.

Puletua effectively put the game beyond doubt with a hat-trick inside the opening 15 minutes as Saints revelled in the sunny conditions.

Leon Pryce also scored a brace while Sean Long kicked 10 goals.

Castleford suffered further misery as Joe Westerman was carried off on a stretcher with a serious-looking injury in the first half.

The 19-year-old loose forward appeared to go into spasms after colliding with a Saints player after 29 minutes.

The game was held up for 12 minutes as he was treated by at least eight medical or training staff.

Saints were already 32-0 ahead at the time, with Puletua starting the scoring after just 90 seconds.

Castleford had still not had the ball in hand when Saints increased their lead three minutes later with Pryce finishing off a slick move.

Puletua powered over for his second before pouncing on Ryan McGoldrick's mistake to claim his hat-trick.

Ade Gardner scored the fifth following Matt Gidley's run before Wilkin chased his own kick for try number six with 23 minutes on the clock.

The game was delayed as Westerman received treatment but Saints were soon back into their stride as Wilkin sped in for his second.

Cas then finally enjoyed some possession and Michael Shenton and Mitchell Sargent scored either side of half time.

But Saints soon resumed their dominance with Bryn Hargreaves forcing his way over and although Kirk Dixon pinched a third Cas try, Puletua barged his way over from close range to bring up the half-century.

Sione Faumunia gave the home fans something else to cheer but Saints responded with quick-fire tries for Wilkin, Maurie Fa'asavalu and Pryce.

Tigers coach Terry Matterson on Joe Westerman's injury:
"He kept having fits and that's why they couldn't take him off the field. He seemed to be okay and then he would have another fit.

"But there is good news because he is coming along okay. That is the main thing.

"I wouldn't think there was too much in [the collision], but we will have a look at the video. We need to find out why he got the injury."

Saints coach Mick Potter on Westerman's injury:
"Things like that do happen but you do lose a bit of focus. It is distracting and it makes you feel for the opposition.

"It is a bit sad that something like that can happen in a game.

"I hope Joe is all right. Making sure he is okay is the first priority."
