RFL backs Murrayfield success

The Rugby Football League is confident the Murrayfield Magic Weekend will be a success despite the economic downturn.

The unique event has been switched to Scotland from Wales' Millennium Stadium and some fear fans will not travel in order to save money.

RFL spokesman Craig Spence told the BBC's Super League Show: "We know fans have to pay to travel to these events, and that's why the tickets are cheap.

"You can watch seven games for 25 or half that if you have a season ticket."

The 2009 event will be played over the weekend of 2-3 May at the same venue that hosted the 2000 Challenge Cup final.

We could play it in either Cardiff, Amsterdam or somewhere in Germany and we think that is a bit too far for our fans to go

Craig Spence on claims they should play at a stadium with a roof

Nine years ago, the Murrayfield pitch was flooded just days before the final between Leeds Rhinos and Bradford Bulls and there have been questions raised over the decision to play at a stadium that has no closable roof.

Spence added: "The weather statistics actually show us that Edinburgh is one of the driest cities in Europe.

"If we were to only play this sort of weekend at stadiums that have a roof we would be limited to about a choice of three in Europe.

"We could play it in either Cardiff, Amsterdam or somewhere in Germany and we think that is a bit too far for our fans to go.

"If it rains in Murrayfield so be it, but it will be the same for both teams."

Rugby League fans can watch the Super League Show again via the BBC's iPlayer or Red Button.
