Wolves' King sorry over gesture

Warrington centre Matt King has asked Wolves fans to forgive an abusive gesture he directed towards them during the side's 60-8 defeat by Harlequins.

King was targeted by some of the club's followers as they slipped to their fifth successive defeat of the season.

"The abuse culminated over a period of time before I reached my breaking point and I snapped," the 28-year-old said on the club's official website.

"I would like to apologise for any offence caused to any supporters."

King said that his decision to speak out on the incident was made without any encouragement from his employers.

"The decision to make this statement was made by me alone and I have not been asked by anyone connected with the club to come forward and make a statement," the Australian added.

"Saturday afternoon's defeat at Harlequins was a very disappointing and frustrating afternoon for the players, fans and officials of this club.

"During the second half I received a barrage of personal abuse directed at me from a section of our 'support'.

"Being only human I retaliated verbally and with a hand gesture to the said 'supporters'.

"I take pride in how I handle myself and always try to set a good example for others to follow on and off the field.

"My reaction to the abuse was out of character for me. This statement has been written with sincerity and I hope the good supporters of Warrington Wolves will accept it."

King has struggled to live up to the considerable expectations that accompanied his arrival at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on a four-year deal from Melbourne Storm last season.

He only showed flashes of the brilliance that have seen him rated as one of the best players in the world, and has been forced to deny that he might seek an early return to Australia.

Warrington finished sixth in last year's Super League table, but closed out the season in dismal form with losses in each of their final five games including a 46-8 play-offs thrashing from Catalans Dragons.
