Pryce grabs double on Wigan debut

Pryce was playing his first game of league since October 2006

Karl Pryce scored two tries on his Wigan debut as the Warriors brushed aside an inexperienced Warrington outfit 44-4 in a pre-season friendly.

The giant Pryce bulldozed over for his first try and then scored another after unselfish play from Darrell Goulding.

He should have had a first-half hat-trick but dropped a long Richie Mathers pass with the line begging.

Sam Tomkins did claim a hat-trick with other tries coming from Mathers, with a brace, Joel Tomkins and Sean Ainscough.

Meanwhile, Salford stepped up preparations for their engage Super League return with a convincing 26-6 friendly win at Leigh on Sunday.

Jeremy Smith, Karl Fitzpatrick, Paul White, Stefan Ratchford and Academy youngster Brad Hargreaves all crossed for the National League champions.

Leigh, playing their first match at their new Sports Village ground, scored a late consolation through Jamie Smith.

On Saturday a young and inexperienced St Helens side narrowly lost 28-26 to Widnes in a pre-season friendly.

With only four of their first-choice squad in action, Saints trailed 12-6 at the break and were unable to get past their National League opponents.

Gavin Dodd scored two tries for Widnes with Loz Wildbore, Anthony Thackeray and Paddy Flynn also crossing.

The Saints tries came from Chris Flannery, Gary Wheeler, Matty Ashurst, Andrew Dixon and Paul Johnson.

Elsewhere, on Boxing Day a young Leeds Rhinos outfit slipped to a 22-16 defeat against an experienced Wakefield side in their first match since the Super League Grand Final.

Centre Jodie Broughton scored a hat-trick for the Rhinos with Michael Ratu also crossing for the champions, who were without all their World Cup stars.

Tries by Liam Walmsley and Sam Obst put Wakefield 10-6 up at the break.

They clinched victory with quick-fire tries in the second half through Matt Blaymire and Jamie Rooney.

The Rhinos included four trialists from the French domestic competition looking to shine in the Boxing Day fixture, with Carcassonne half-back Amar Sabri looking impressive in defence.
