Three clubs given A grade licence

Leeds and Hull have both been given A licences

Leeds Rhinos, Hull FC and Warrington have been given category A Super League licences by the Rugby Football League.

All 14 clubs awarded a three-year licence on Tuesday to compete in Super League from the 2009 season are graded as either A, B or C standard.

Bradford, St Helens and Wigan have been awarded B grades with the remaining eight sides judged to be C category.

"The three clubs that received A grade licences deserve special commendation," said RFL chief executive Richard Lewis.

"They are impressive both on and off the field. Of course we hope these clubs maintain these high standards over the licence period."

The RFL has given each club extensive feedback on their licence application - and Lewis wants the clubs to take this on board.

"The goal for the other 11 teams is to look at the detailed feedback they have received this morning from the RFL on their licence application and work out what they need to do to achieve an A grade next time round," added Lewis.

"The hard work for many starts here. For clubs who have ambitions for new stadiums, they need to ensure by 2010 when the next licence application process starts, that they are more than just plans.

"The clubs that have missed out this time round will be even more determined to win a licence in the future."

All the clubs will have to reapply for a licence when the initial three-year period ends in 2011.

The eight clubs given C status licences are Catalans Dragons, Castleford Tigers, Celtic Crusaders, Harlequins, Huddersfield Giants, Hull KR, Salford and Wakefield.

The RFL has already confirmed that a team from the National Leagues will be given a licence in 2011 subject to them meeting the required qualifying standards.
