Rugby League hits the City

The match was played at the Honourable Artillery Club in the City of London

Tuesday saw the first game of rugby league played in the City of London, staged at the Honourable Artillery Club

Plenty turned up to watch but several people struggled to come to terms with the soft grass

The two teams ran out through a guard of honour made up of children from Lordship Lane Primary School

The game was a pre-season friendly between Super League side Harlequins and amateur outfit London Skolars

The crowd comprised a mixture of rugby league fans and people new to the game

A crowd of 300 watched the fixture, with die-hard supporters of both clubs mixing with people new to the game

London Skolars show their strength in the tackle

RFL chief Richard Lewis was in the crowd enjoying the action - and saw the fixture as a chance to promote the game

City workers watch the action as Harlequins take control against the Skolars

Lewis said: "The RFL is keen to support innovation and this fixture brings new people to the game"

Quins had too much skill and speed for their amateur opponents

Several Skolars players could not secure the day off work and the team spent a lot of the game defending their line

Quins played some flowing rugby for their first pre-season fixture

Harlequins played some good attacking rugby in a game that was played over four 20 minute quarters - winning 56-0

The two teams packed down in unusual surroundings

The offices of the City of London made a surreal backdrop as the two teams packed down for a scrum

It was a difficult afternoon for the Skolars, who ended up pointless

Despite several near misses, the Skolars could not muster a try - but the day was seen as a winner for rugby league
