England face French test
Andy Farrell's England topped Group E to move into the quarter-finals of the rugby league World Sevens in Sydney.

They cruised to a 30-8 win over Tonga and followed it up with a narrow 18-10 win over Australia Aborigines.

England will now face France, who topped Pool F with a 12-6 win over Samoa and a 28-8 defeat of Papua New Guinea.

South Sydney Rabbitohs edged defending NRL champions Sydney Roosters and then overcame Russia to book their last-eight spot.

Souths, who struggled in the NRL's regular competition last year, beat the Roosters 22-12 and then scored 24 unanswered second-half points to beat Russia 38-12.

Parramatta finished atop Pool C with a 26-16 win over Penrith and a 16-10 win over Lebanon.

The Eels will meet Canberra in the quarter-finals after the Raiders thrashed Melbourne 24-8 and then edged Brisbane 26-24 with a try in the last minute.

Eagles v Dragons

In Pool A, Cronulla beat the Bulldogs 24-16 and then edged North Queensland 24-22 to advance into a Cup quarter-final against Souths.

In the other matches, resurgent Manly beat West Tigers 20-12 and edged Newcastle 18-14 to win Pool G.

The Eagles will now play St George-Illawarra after the Dragons beat New Zealand Warriors 24-16 and Fiji 40-14 to top Pool H.
