Giants pummel Warriors
Stanley Gene ran in four tries for Huddersfield
Huddersfield Giants bettered their Northern Ford Premiership scoring record by crushing Whitehaven Warriors 86-10 on Sunday. The Giants, runaway league leaders, eased to their 18th win and avenged a 12-12 draw against the Cumbrians in January - the only point they have lost all season. They ran in 15 tries to surge past their previous best of 76 points, set a fortnight ago. Top try-scorer was Stanley Gene with four, while there were hat-tricks for centre Eorl Crabtree and winger Matt Whittaker.
Featherstone continued their good progress by beating Rochdale 31-24. They trailed 14-13 with 19 minutes remaining before turning things around with four tries in a devastating 10-minute spell while the Hornets were down to 12 men. Captain Richard Chapman scored twice, while Steve Dooler and Danny Seal crossed to hand the Rovers a big win. A late try from substitute Simon Svabic earned Leigh a thrilling 26-22 derby win over Oldham at Hurst Cross. Leigh stormed to a 22-10 lead courtesy of tries from David Highton, Adam Bristow, Mark McCully and Neil Turley.
Oldham levelled with 15 minutes remaining, but home hearts were broken when Svabic raced up the short side to score the winning try five minutes from time. Hull Kingston Rovers put all speculation surrounding the future of coach Gary Wilkinson to one side as they beat bottom side Gateshead 58-8. Rovers ran in 10 tries, with loan signing Nick Pinkney scoring twice on his debut and skipper Chris Charles finished with 22 points from a try and nine conversions. Sheffield Eagles edged an error-strewn encounter with Hunslet 26-7. Andy Poynter scored twice after the break to round off the victory. Batley beat Keighley 32-16 to record their sixth-successive victory and continue their rise up the table. The Bulldogs ran in six tries with Roger Simpson and Craig Lingard scoring twice. Dewsbury Rams cruised to a 56-8 victory over Chorley Lynx. The visitors led twice in the first half, but the Rams hit back with converted scores from Richard Slater and Nathan Batty and then ran in eight more tries without reply. Doncaster edged a tight game against Workington 26-24 with a late penalty. Town had fought back from 24-6 down but could not find the crucial score and it cost them as Johnny Woodcock slotted over the penalty four minutes from time.
