Wigan swoop for Smith
Kiwi Craig Smith will replace the retiring Neil Cowie
Wigan have completed the signing of New Zealand prop Craig Smith on a two-year contract.
The St George Illawarra captain, who was in the Kiwi side that lost to Australia in the World Cup final last November, will join up with his former St George team-mate Jamie Ainscough next season. Smith will fill the gap left by the retirement of Neil Cowie and takes the Warriors' overseas quota spot to be vacated by Matthew Johns' return to Australia later this year.
Wigan chairman Maurice Lindsay said: "We are pleased to secure the services of one of the world's best prop forwards." Smith, who played in all six of New Zealand's World Cup matches, has been dogged by disciplinary problems in Australia and is currently sitting out a six-match stint after being found guilty of striking. He has been banned for a total of 15 matches so far but Wigan coach Stuart Raper is not concerned about the player's past. He said: "I am aware that he has been suspended on occasions in Australia but he is a very tough competitor who simply wants to win." Very ambitious The arrival of Smith continues the influx of big-name players from Australia's National Rugby League. Already Super League VII will be bolstered by the addition of established NRL men such as Lesley Vainikolo (Bradford) and Wayne Bartrim (Castleford). Smith said: "I am very ambitious in rugby league and I have made the move because I am joining an ambitious club." Another forward on the move is the veteran Gary Mercer who has quit Warrington and made a surprise return to Leeds.
The 35-year-old former New Zealand international captained the Rhinos in 1997 before moving to Halifax and joined Warrington for a second time earlier this season. Leeds spokesman Phil Daley said: "Gary contacted coach Daryl Powell after being released by Warrington and has agreed to join us for the rest of the season. "He intends to retire and wants to finish his career on a bit of a high. "He has fond memories of his time at Leeds and the move helps out both parties." Leeds need cover for the back row, with Bradley Clyde currently sidelined with a torn calf muscle, and Andy Hay and Kevin Sinfield also carrying injuries. |
