Salford 18-56 St Helens

Steve McCormack's reign as Salford coach got off to a dismal start as St Helens romped over for 10 tries.

McCormack, who has taken over the reigns from Australian John Harvey, saw his side outclassed. They trailed 38-6 after a first-half blitz by Saints.

Paul Sculthorpe was again in top form grabbing 20 points with a try and eight goals.

We are playing some great attacking rugby league and we're going up to the level that we attained last season

Paul Wellens also grabbed a hat-trick of tries with Salford conceding 22 points in a nightmare 10-minute spell midway through the first half.

Keiron Cunningham went over for Saints' first try after only two minutes before Gary Broadbent drew Salford level.

Then Saints stepped on the gas adding six more tries before the break through Wellens (2), Sean Hoppe (2), Tommy Martyn and Sculthorpe.

Salford improved after the half-time interval, with Danny Arnold racing the full length of the field after intercepting Sculthorpe's pass before Mike Wainwright also went over.

Salford did limit Saints to three tries in the second half with Peter Shiels, Wayne McDonald and Wellens crossing.

The win helps Saints cement their third place in the Super League table while Salford are still languishing in third from bottom.

McCormack said: "We showed more pride and passion in the second half and I want to see more of that in the weeks to come.

"We need to improve and especially against Wakefield at home next week."
