Mercer willing to play on
![]() Mercer needs two tries for his career century
Gary Mercer has insisted he will
continue to play for Halifax Blue Sox under his successor Steve Linnane.
The 34-year-old Mercer resigned as the club's coach last week but has yet to reveal the reasons behind his sudden decision.
However, while negotiations with the club continue through his solicitor, Mercer said: "I have told the club that I will play for Halifax under Mr Linnane." The former New Zealand international who previously played for Bradford, Warrington and Leeds, needs two more tries to bring up his century but has already announced his intention to make this his last season. "I have written to Halifax and told them I resigned as coach but not as player. Therefore I am willing to continue my playing duties within the club," he added. "I have yet to receive a reply from Halifax. At this point of time, I have not attended any training sessions. I've been told to keep away." Halifax, who appointed Mercer's assistant Linnane as caretaker coach, are considering the offer. The Blue Sox meet Super League leaders Wigan at the Shay on Friday night.
