Award winning architect Sir Norman Foster revealed his bold plans for Wembley in 1999
Sir Norman Foster's plans for a new Wembley, unveiled in 1999, have been scaled down and revised

A model of the proposed re-development of Wembley stadium
The revised Wembley will cost approximately 750m, and it beat alternative sites in the Midlands to approval

Improvements to the local road and rail infrastructure also form part of the plan
Foster's original plans were scaled down and an on-site hotel and office complex scrapped

The 90,000 capacity stadium can stage athletics through the use of a specially-fitted platform

Although Wembley has won provisional approval, funding may still prove a problem for the FA
The project will provide a permanent home for England games, with a huge arch replacing the twin towers

Sport England's Trevor Brooking, Culture secretary Tessa Jowell and Football Association chief executive Adam Crozier admire the design
The 133 metre high steel arch will be the largest single span roof structure in the world

The roof can be moved within 15 minutes of kick-off
A key design feature is the sliding roof that will ensure the pitch receives enough sunlight

When the stadium is completed in 2006 it will form a major landmark on the London skyline
