Hakkinen's F1 career in pictures

1993

Hakkinen picked up tips from three-times world champion Ayrton Senna while driving alongside the Brazilian in 1993
After his 1991 F1 debut with Lotus, Hakkinen graduated to McLaren where he learnt from the late Ayrton Senna


1995

After an horrific crash at the end of season Australian GP Hakkinen emerged from a coma and battled back from serious injury to race the following year
A horror crash in practice for the final race of the year at Adelaide saw Hakkinen fighting for his life in hospital


1998

The season-opening Australian Grand Prix was a controversial affair for Hakkinen as he won after McLaren team-mate David Coulthard let him past on the final lap
McLaren were at the centre of controversy as team-mate Coulthard handed Hakkinen the lead in Melbourne


1998 and 1999

Hakkinen was crowned world champion in 1998 and 1999, becoming only the seventh man to win back-to-back titles
World championship glory came twice to the Flying Finn, clinching both his titles in Japan


1999

Monza 1999 saw an outpour of emotion from Hakkinen as his McLaren let him down yet again in his title quest, but he went on to be crowned champion
As the title battle with Ferrari's Eddie Irvine reached a climax, Hakkinen cried after crashing at Monza


2001

Hakkinen had many a duel with Ferrari's Michael Schumacher but it ended at Suzuka in 2001, Mika's last race
Hakkinen's final battle with rival Michael Schumacher came in Japan in 2001 with Mika finishing fourth


2002

Hakkinen is retiring to spend more time with wife Erja and young son Hugo
Hakkinen has enjoyed his time away from F1 and has called time on his career to spend more time with his family
