Davis is the current world champion and record holder in the 1000m
Shani Davis became the first black athlete to win an individual gold medal at the Winter Games after claiming the 1000m speed skating title on Saturday.

The 23-year-old American recorded a time of one minute 8.89 seconds, edging compatriot Joey Cheek by 0.27ths of a second into silver.

Dutch skater and former world champion Erben Wennemars claimed bronze.

America's Vonetta Flowers became the first black Winter Olympic champion in the two-woman bobsleigh in 2002.

Davis, the current world champion and record holder, has not lost a single 1000m race he has entered this season.
