Steve Nash produced the first play-off triple-double of his career to earn Phoenix a 114-108 win over Dallas in the NBA Western Conference play-offs.
He scored 34 points with 12 assists and 13 rebounds as the Suns moved within one match of the first appearance in the conference finals in 12 years.
"Game five is very important. It would have been devastating to lose at home and then have to go there," said Nash.
The next game is on Friday and Phoenix are the NBA's best road team this year.
The Mavericks' most influential player was Dirk Nowitzki, with 34 points and 10 rebounds.
Dallas coach Avery Johnson admitted the better team had won.
"We didn't follow the game plan. They shredded us to pieces," he said.
"They out-played us. They out-everythinged us."
