The Miami Heat beat the Washington Wizards 105-86 in game one of their Eastern Conference semi-final in Florida on Sunday.
Dwyane Wade scored 20 points and Shaquille O'Neal added 19.
Miami will be looking to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series when they host game two on Tuesday.
In San Antonio, Tony Parker notched 29 points as the Spurs beat the Seattle Supersonics 103-81 in their Western Conference semi-final opener.
In Miami, O'Neal, who finished second in the Most Valuable Player vote, also had seven rebounds in just 26 minutes of action before fouling out.
Keyon Dooling contributed a career-high 15 points while Eddie Jones added 13 for the Heat, who improved to 5-0 against the Wizards this season.
Gilbert Arenas had a game-high 25 points and six steals for the Wizards, who fell 0-2 behind the Chicago Bulls before rallying to sweep the next four games of their quarter-final.
Larry Hughes added 23 for the Wizards while Antawn Jamison had 13 and Jared Jeffries and Brendan Haywood 10 apiece.
"We have a locker room full of guys who love a challenge," said Hughes.
"We've been down before. We can definitely win a basketball game any time we step out there."
In San Antonio, the SuperSonics played almost the entire contest without all-star guard Ray Allen and Vladimir Radmanovic who went down in the opening half with ankle injuries.
Allen, who averaged 32.4 points per game in the first round series against Sacramento, left the game in the second quarter.
Rashard Lewis led the SuperSonics with 19 points while Antonio Daniels scored 15.
Glenn Robinson chipped in with 16 points and Manu Ginobili added 10 for the Spurs, who will host game two of the best-of-seven series on Tuesday.
