St Louis Cardinals built a commanding 2-0 lead over San Diego Padres in the best-of-five National League Division Series, winning match two 6-2.
The Cardinals broke in front quickly, scoring twice in the third and twice in the fourth to lead 4-0.
Mark Mulder pitched six shutout innings and Reggie Sanders and David Eckstein both drove in a pair of runs.
The Padres got one run back in the seventh but the Sanders double at the end of the innings sealed their demise.
John Smoltz notched seven hits over seven innings as Atlanta Braves recorded an emphatic 7-1 win over Houston Astros to level their series at 1-1.
Jason Lane opened the scoring for the Astros with a run-scoring single in the first, but the Braves scored three runs in the second and two more in the third.
Brian McCann's three-run homer put Atlanta firmly in the driving seat.
The Braves, who have won 14 consecutive division titles, also saw Andy Jones post three hits, score three times and drive in a run.
