Auburn Tigers completed the first undefeated season in school history with a 16-13 victory over Virgina Tech in the Sugar Bowl.
Jason Campbell passed for
195 yards and a touchdown to earn MVP honours in a defensive battle.
He completed 10-of-15 passes and sparked a 97-yard scoring drive in the third quarter with a 53-yard completion to Anthony Mix that set up Auburn's only
touchdown of the game.
The Tigers, ranked third before the game, intercepted Virginia Tech quarterback and
ACC Player of the Year Bryan Randall twice, including once late
in the fourth quarter.
"We are one of the best teams in the country. Someone's
going to pick us as national champs, and that's all we want,"
said Auburn's coach Tommy Tuberville.
Alex Smith threw for 328 yards and four touchdowns as fifth-ranked Utah beat No 19 Pittsburgh 35-7 in the Fiesta Bowl at Tempe's Sun Devil Stadium.
Smith completed 29-of-37 passes with no interceptions for the Utes (12-0), who completed an undefeated season for the first time since 1930. Smith also had a team-leading 68 yards rushing.
Utah head coach Urban Meyer coached his final game for the Utes, finishing his two-year stint at the school 22-2.
He will take over at the University of Florida immediately and defensive co-ordinator Kyle Whittingham will start his duties at Utah as the head coach.
Paris Warren added career highs of 15 catches for 198 yards and two TDs for Utah.
Tyler Palko completed 22 of 40 passes for 251 yards with one touchdown for Pittsburgh (8-4).
Panthers head coach Walt Harris was also in charge for the final time. He is leaving for Stanford after Pitt did not renew his contract and named alum
and former NFL head coach Dave Wannstedt as his replacement.
The game was one to forget for Harris, whose team was outgained 467-268 by the Utes, whose defense recorded a Fiesta Bowl record nine sacks.
Dusty Mangum hit a 37-yard field goal as time expired to hand No 6 Texas a dramatic 38-37 victory over 13th-ranked Michigan in the 91st
Rose Bowl.
Quarterback Vince Young accounted for all five of the Longhorns' touchdowns - four on the ground and one by air - as Texas rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to capture the victory in its first-ever BCS Bowl game.
Texas (11-1) was also making its first-ever trip to the Rose Bowl after edging out No. 4 California in the BCS standings at the end of the regular season.
Tate was the last-gasp hero for Iowa
|
Drew Tate's 56-yard touchdown pass to Warren Holloway on the final play sealed a dramatic 30-25 Cotton Bowl win for Iowa over LSU.
The score capped a wild fourth quarter and spoiled a comeback by the Tigers, who overcame a 12-point deficit with 8½ left.
LSU coach Nick Saban, who will become the coach of the NFL's Miami
Dolphins next week, threw up his arms in frustration and then watched as the entire Iowa team mobbed Holloway in the end zone.
LSU freshman JaMarcus Russell had come off the bench to spark the rally by throwing two TD passes. When he hit Skyler Green for a 3-yard score, the Tigers led 25-24 with 46 seconds to go.
After Tate completed two passes, a penalty pushed Iowa back to its 44 with 14 seconds left. Tate wound up and threw long to an open Holloway, who caught the pass in stride at the 10 and dashed to the end zone as time expired.
Bowden is bearing down on the legendary Paterno
|
Coach Bobby Bowden moved within one bowl win of Joe Paterno's NCAA record of 19 at Penn State as Florida State beat West Virginia 30-18 in the Gator Bowl.
Leon Washington ran for 195 yards and Chris Rix crafted two long second-half touchdown drives despite playing poorly for much of his final game.
West Virginia have lost 11 of their last 12 bowls games and are 0-5 in the Gator.
In the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, third-string QB Rick Clausen threw for five TDs as
No 15 Tennessee eased to a 38-7 victory over Texas A&M.
Tennessee wound up with the most lopsided victory in their 45-game bowl history, coming within 5:13 of their first bowl shut-out since the last time they played the Aggies, way back in the 1957 Gator Bowl.
In the Outback Bowl in Tampa, David Greene, the winningest quarterback in NCAA history, enjoyed one last victory as Georgia beat Wisconsin 24-21.
LeFors led Louisville to victory over Boise State
|
Greene threw for 264 yards and two touchdowns in his last game for the Bulldogs (10-2), continuing his assault on the Southeastern Conference record book and adding victory number 42 to his NCAA mark.
Stefan LeFors threw for two TDs and ran for another as seventh-ranked
Louisville put an end to the nation's longest win streak with a 44-40 victory over No. 10 Boise State in the Liberty Bowl.
LeFors completed 18-of-26 passes for 193 yards with one interception and added 75 yards on the ground to lead the Cardinals back from a 13-point deficit in the third quarter.
Josh Haldi rushed for two touchdowns, as Northern Illinois rallied from a 14-point deficit to beat Troy Trojans 34-21 in the Silicon Valley Bowl in San Jose.
Quarterback Haldi completed eight-of-24 passes for 146 yards, and also rushed for nine yards on six carries with a pair of rushing touchdowns.
Cumbie was named Offensive Player of the Game in San Diego
|
Sonny Cumbie completed 40-of-60 passes for 521 yards and three touchdowns as No. 23 Texas Tech upset fourth-ranked California 45-31 in the Holiday Bowl at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium.
Marion Barber III ran for 187 yards and a touchdown and team-mate Laurence Maroney added 105 yards on the ground to lead Minnesota to a 20-16 win over Alabama in the Music City Bowl in Nashville.
Sam Keller threw for 370 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start to lead No 21 Arizona State to a 27-23 win over Purdue in the 71st
Sun Bowl.
Keller, playing in place of an injured Andrew Walter, completed 25-of-45 passes and tossed his second TD pass to Rudy Burgess in the final minute to lift the Sun Devils (9-3) to victory.
Andre Callender rushed for 174 yards on 26 carries and scored the go-ahead touchdown, as 25th-ranked Boston College defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels 37-24 in the Continental Tire Bowl in Charlotte.
Aaron Polanco ran for three touchdowns and passed for another as Navy capped the academy's best season in 99 years with a win 34-19 over New Mexico in the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco.
