NFL legend Reggie White has died of a heart attack at the age of 43.
The defensive end played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers from 1985-1998 and also staged a brief comeback for the Carolina Panthers in 2000.
White died at his North Carolina home seven days after his 43rd birthday.
Nicknamed "The Minister of Defence," he had 198 career sacks and appeared in two Super Bowls with Green Bay, winning the season-ending showcase in 1996.
White, who was selected for the Pro Bowl 13 times, had a suspected lung condition, according to a preliminary autopsy.
His wife, Sara, said in a statement: "Our beloved husband, father and friend passed away.
"His family appreciates your thoughts and prayers as we mourn the loss of Reggie White. We want to thank you in advance for honouring our privacy."
Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffry Lurie paid tribute to White.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of the greatest men ever to play the game of football," he said.
"On behalf of the entire Eagles family, our condolences go out to his wife, Sara, to his children, and to all those who have been touched by Reggie throughout his life.
"His legacy on and off the football field will never be forgotten."
And the NFL recognised the impact that White had during his life, both on and off the field.
"Reggie White was a gentle warrior who will be remembered as
one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history," NFL
commissioner Paul Tagliabue said in a statement on NFL.com.
"Equally as impressive as his achievements on the field was
the positive impact he made off the field and the way he served
as a positive influence on so many young people."
