Johnny Oates, who managed the Texas Rangers to their first three Major League play-off appearances, died on Friday from a brain tumour aged 58.
Oates, who also managed the Baltimore Orioles from 1991-94, had an operation to remove the tumour in 2001 but it returned in April 2003.
He guided the Rangers to play-offs in 1996, 98 and 99 and shared the American League Manager of the Year award in 96.
Oates resigned in 2001 after Texas lost 17 of their first 28 games.
As a player, Oates spent 11 seasons as a catcher in the major
leagues, batting .250 with 14 home runs.
He played for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series in 1977 and 1978.
