Ricky Williams has retired from the NFL at the age of 27, the Miami Dolphins have confirmed.
Reports had earlier said Williams was bowing out of the sport because he had grown tired of the game.
And on Sunday, Miami coach Dave Wannstedt said: "He made his decision, he had his reasons. Make no mistake - I was shocked."
Williams has played just five seasons in the NFL and scored 41 touchdowns and rushed 6,354 yards in that time.
Earlier he had told the Miami Herald newspaper: "I just don't want to be in this business anymore. Everyone has thrown every possible scenario at me about why I shouldn't do this, but they're in denial.
"I'm happy with my decision."
