Garret Anderson hit a
tiebreaking double in the eighth inning to give Anaheim a 4-3 lead, and Chone
Figgins' RBI single later in the inning gave Anaheim a
two-run edge.
Earlier, Darin Erstad hit a
three-run homer for the Angels.
Jermaine Dye hit a two-run shot for the Athletics, who won
the series opener.
In other action, the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Detroit Tigers 3-0, Tampa Bay won 6-5 against Toronto and Chicago White Sox won 5-1 against Kansas City.
National League
The Pedro Feliz-inspired San Francisco Giants improved their play-off chances with a 9-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
San Francisco moved within one-and-a-half games of leaders the Dodgers in the NL West and a half game behind Chicago in the wild-card race.
The Dodgers and Giants play four more
times, including the final three games of the season next
weekend at Dodger Stadium.
Pedro Feliz hit a tiebreaking grand slam with two outs in the eighth inning for his fourth hit.
Scott Eyre (2-2) pitched the eighth for the win and Ray
Durham homered and hit an RBI double for San Francisco,
who lost the opener of this crucial three-game series 3-2
on Friday.
Elsewhere, the New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 and the Milwaukee Brewers trounced the Houston Astros 8-0.
