Greg Maddux overcame a shaky start to post his 301st career win as the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-6 in Milwaukee on Thursday.
Maddux (12-8) allowed four runs in the first inning but retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced.
He pitched seven innings, allowing five runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
LaTroy Hawkins pitched the ninth for his 19th save, while Sammy Sosa hit his 566th career home run and 27th of the season.
Sosa is now just seven home runs behind Harmon Killebrew for seventh on the all-time list.
Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee also homered for the Cubs.
Chris Capuano (6-7) took the loss, allowing eight runs on eight hits in just 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven and walking four.
Geoff Jenkins hit a three-run homer in the first inning off Maddux for the Brewers.
American League
Josh Paul, Vladimir Guerrero and Darin Erstad hit multi-run homers to lead the Anaheim Angels to a 10-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Paul belted a grand slam, outfielder Guerrero added a three-run homer while Erstad hit a two-run shot to give Anaheim their 10th victory in their last 14 games.
The Angels are just one game behind American League wild card leaders Boston and Texas after the win, and trail first place Oakland by 1 1/2 games in the AL West.
John Lackey (10-10) got the win, allowing four runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts and one walk.
However, Lackey, who had taken a 8-0 lead into the seventh inning, gave up four runs and was replaced by Scot Shields who got two outs before Francisco Rodriguez got the last five to pick up his 10th save.
Rob Bell (5-7) allowed three runs on eight hits over six innings to take the loss, striking out two and walking one.
Geoff Blum went 4-for-4 with an RBI for the Devil Rays, while Jose Cruz Jnr and Carl Crawford hit home runs, both off Lackey.
