Flying start helps Bruins
Mike Knuble
Mike Knuble made a remarkable start

In Florida, early strikes from Mike Knuble and a late Brian Rolston score, 27 seconds into overtime, helped the Boston Bruins rally to beat the Panthers 6-5.

After Knuble set an NHL record by tallying twice in the first 27 seconds, Florida came roaring back with four unanswered goals.

Joe Thornton brought Boston level with two goals in the second period. The teams traded third-period goals to force overtime.

Florida has the worst home league record, with just seven wins so far.

Alexei Kovalev, acquired from Pittsburgh in an eight-player deal Monday, struck the only goal in the third period as the New York Rangers edged the Penguins 1-0 Friday.

Kovalev, who began his career in New York, netted after assists from defender Tom Poti and Brian Leetch. He also scored on his Rangers debut Wednesday.

Mike Dunham turned aside all 26 Pittsburgh shots to earn his third shut-out as Glen Sather won for only the second time in six games behind the Rangers bench.

New York moved to 10th in the Eastern Conference with the victory.

In Raleigh, North Carolina, the Hurricanes ended a seven-game losing streak by edging the Washington Capitals 3-1.

It was only the third win in 23 games for Carolina, who were thankful to Craig Adams, Jan Hlavac and Jeff O'Neill.

Kevin Weekes turned aside 30 shots to earn the victory, his first in 12 games. Michael Nylander scored Washington's lone goal.

Friday's results

NY Rangers 1-0 Pittsburgh
Carolina 3-1 Washington
Florida 5-6 Boston (OT)
Atlanta 2-2 Tampa Bay
Chicago 2-4 San Jose
Minnesota 2-3 Phoenix
Dallas 2-4 Anaheim
