'Fastest human' Hayes dies
Hayes won double gold at the 1964 Olympics
Hayes won double gold at the 1964 Olympics
Former Dallas Cowboy and Olympic sprint gold medallist Bob Hayes has died at the age of 59.

The fastest runner of his generation, Hayes died on Wednesday in his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida.

He had been battling liver and kidney ailments and prostate cancer, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Hayes had a sparkling athletic career that saw him dubbed the "World's Fastest Human", and later redefined the way the NFL plays pass defence.

But many of his accomplishments were later tainted by drug and alcohol addiction, which landed him in jail and played a big part in his never being entered in the NFL Hall of Fame.

At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Hayes won the gold medal in the 100 metres, tying the then-world record of 10.05 seconds.

He also anchored the US 4x100m relay team to victory in a world-record 39.06secs, recording a sensational split of 8.6secs.
