Maddux nears Young mark
Smoltz recorded his 52nd save of the season
National League Atlanta Braves pitcher Greg Maddux gave up just four hits in seven innings to steer his side to a 2-1 defeat of the Philadelphia Phillies. In doing so he moved to within one victory of joining the legendary Cy Young in winning 15 or more games in 15 straight seasons. Maddux now has 14 wins for the season with just six losses. Closer John Smoltz got four outs to record his 52nd save of the season, one short of the National League record.
American League The Minnesota Twins lost three players to injuries but still managed to beat the Detroit Tigers 7-4. Jacque Jones had four hits, including a home run, before he sprained his left ankle sliding into second base. Torii Hunter was hit by a pitch which bruised his left triceps and Corey Koskie bruised his right shin after fouling a ball off his leg. All the injuries were not thought to be serious. Luis Rivas equalled his career-best four hits and pitcher Brad Radke recorded his ninth win of the season as Detroit crashed to their 21st loss in 26 games.
